How to Get an Accurate and Comprehensive CMDB for JSM Cloud
WEBINAR FAQs
INTEGRATIONS
What is the maximum amount of objects?
Device42 does not limit the number of devices or resources that can be discovered. The maximum number of objects that can be held in JSM Assets depends on the version of JSM you have. Please contact Atlassian for more information.
Could a sync take over 24 hours?
We have completed performance tests, and 500,000 objects take about 3 hours to update.
Is there an integration available for the Data Center version of JSM?
Device42 has an integration on the Atlassian Marketplace for the Data Center version of Jira.
In the Data Center Device42 Plugin for insight the Business Applications from Device42 cannot be imported, can we map business applications with the cloud plugin?
Business Applications can only be imported to JSM using the new Device42 for Jira Service Management Assets connector. The Data Center integration does not support Business Applications.
The demo showed all devices going into a single “device” object – can the integration map to different object types? What else is configurable in the integration?
Device42 does provide a standard out-of-the-box schema, but Device42 is flexible, so you can map the schema to different object types.
On data sources, can Device42 federate with Intune or Jamf natively?
We have a native integration with Intune. Jamf is not supported natively, but we do have customers who have integrated with Jamf using our REST API.
How do we get this to work? What are the steps to configure this?
Check out our short “How To” video tutorial to set up the integration. Documentation can be found here.
Is it possible to gain insights on the number of incidents and changes associated with assets, devices or servers discovered in Device42 after integrating with Atlassian JSM?
Yes. Devices (and any object in Assets) can be linked to Incidents and Changes allowing for reporting on issues by device.
Can I add custom object types (not part of the IT-centric schema) in Device42 and have them sync over to Assets Cloud? For example, sync Device42 with my LDAP or Okta to create a self-updating Org Chart and bring it into its own separate Object Schema in Assets? For ESM use cases, non-IT teams.
Yes, Device42 has an out-of-the box schema to get you started, but has the flexibility to customize the schema to your needs.
Is the discovered data a push or pull from Device42?
The discovered data is pushed from Device42 to JSM Assets.
DISCOVERY
You said the tool is agentless…how do you deal with a remote workforce (endpoints) that are not tied to a corporate network via VPN.
Device42 does have agents for this scenario. More information can be found here: https://docs.device42.com/auto-discovery/agent-based-offline-discovery/.
We also have a native integration with Microsoft Intune that will bring those remote devices into the Device42 inventory.
Does Device42 have an agent to do discovery or is it only agentless? How do you generally handle questions around agentless access to the systems you need to scan (Service accounts etc)? How do you handle DMZ networks? Is there a relay type Device42 server that can consolidate the data before sending out etc?
We do have agents to support scenarios where the device is not on an accessible network. More information can be found here: https://docs.device42.com/auto-discovery/agent-based-offline-discovery/.
Device42 also has Remote Collectors that will collect data agentless locally and send results back to the Main Appliance via 443.
Being agentless, how does Device42 get discovery data from a server?
The method of discovery will depend on the type of device being discovered. For example Windows-based machines use WMI, Linux machines use SSH, and hypervisor hosts utilize the appropriate APIs.
If you are running the Device42 appliance on-premise, what firewall rules are required to allow communication?
Remote collectors are placed within each network segment you want to scan. Discovered data is sent back to the main application via port 443.
Is Device42 ID a serial number or UUID?
It is a serial number.
When you’re pulling OS versions, are you able to integrate any vendor info like end of support for device lifecycle?
Yes, our EnrichAI service provides a number of enhancements to discovered data. It standardizes names of vendors and operating systems to provide better reporting and matching. It also adds End of Life and End of Support data to device records. We’ll be releasing additional data standardization and enrichment capabilities throughout the year.
How is Mainframe discovery/mapping done?
Information on our AS/400 and IBM z/OS can be found here:
https://docs.device42.com/auto-discovery/ibm-i-as400/
https://docs.device42.com/auto-discovery/z-os-ibm-mainframe/
Assuming AIX, z-server or i-servers are also discovered?
Yes, we support AIX, IBM i and IBM z servers.
Does Device42 discover MySql? MongoDB?
Yes, we discover MySql and Mongo databases as well as others such as Postgres, Oracle and MSSQL.
How can we get an inventory of URLs of an application? The URLs would be Services?
URLs corresponding to services we’ve discovered on a device can be found in the details of that device.
How to get Business Application (logical applications like a HR based on Sharepoint running on 3 servers)—server mapping? Do we need to upload a Business Application and server mapping?
Device42 automatically discovers the communications between devices. Determining which of these communications are part of a business application does require some manual intervention, but that is done entirely with Device42 and does not require uploading external data.
Is the relationship / dependency mapping between an infrastructure asset (e.g., server/ database) to business application mapping automatically configured or does it need manual mapping / intervention?
Device42 automatically discovers the communications between devices. Determining which of these communications are part of a business application does require some manual intervention.
Where can we find that information, such as serial numbers, etc, within Device42?
That information can be found on the device details page in Device42.
How often do you recommend discovery?
For environments where there is not a lot of change, we recommend once a day. For environments where there are a lot of change management activities occurring or migrations, you might want to perform a sync multiple times a day.
After you build a business application and manually define what you want to see, if there are changes to the affinity group that the business application is built on, does Device42 inform you that the application may need to be updated?
Yes. Changes to affinity groups, including a detailed historic view of Affinity groups, is clearly communicated so updates can be made.
Would you need to input rack details manually?
You need to identify the rack initially, but once you do, Device42’s auto-generated rack diagrams make creating accurate rack diagrams fast and easy for ½-U and ½-depth and back-to-back devices, making it effortless for IT teams to manage the IT infrastructure.
About mapping, is it automated or does it have to be done manually?
There is an out-of-the-box schema that automatically maps to the most common fields from Device42. Device42 provides the flexibility to manually map other data fields as needed to JSM Assets.
Does it capture device status? (i.e. powered On/Off)
Yes, Device42 reports the status of physical and virtual devices based on the last discovery scan.
Are tags discovered and retrieved from the devices or are they added in Device42?
The tags can be manually assigned or automatically added to devices based on rules defined by the user.
Does Device42 also provide details of multiple network interface cards (NICs)?
Yes, Device42 will discover all NICs installed in a device.
GENERAL
This is one standard version and there are no tiers that provide various levels of features of this application right?
The core product is licensed by the number of devices. There are additional options that are licensed separately such as ADM, Software discovery, Storage arrays and more.
What are the main differences between Device42 device scanning and asset discovery scanning tools?
The main difference is the breadth and depth of discovery that Device42 can offer. Device42 has the widest and deepest automated, agentless discovery solution available. We discover everything on-premise, in virtual environments and in the public cloud from services, hardware, software, and even storage. As part of our discovery solution, you also get the following capabilities: Enrich AI, CMDB, DCIM, IPAM, and ITAM.
We have never used Device42. Is there a full featured trial version we can use to test this integration with Atlassian JSM?
Yes. You can start your Device42 free trial by completing the form on this page. Then download the Jira Service Management Assets connector on the Atlassian Marketplace.
Does Device42 offer software assets management (SAM) and integration with Jira Assets such as F.E. License expiration dates, available and taken licenses (o365, OEM licenses, etc)
Yes, Device42 can track licenses and discover software in use. We currently do not track SaaS license usage, such as o365. More information here: https://docs.device42.com/apps/software/software-license-management/
